Sylvie Crawford, a busy, homeschooling mom, has chosen Usborne Books & More as her side hustle. She answered many questions we had about how this side hustle can fit into a homeschool mom’s life.
So how did Sylvie get into this particular side hustle?
She went to a few parties and fell in love with the quality, durability and engagement of these great books. There was nothing else like it on the market. It was very affordable to join and the benefits were huge, so it didn’t take her long to make a decision.
She only started a few months ago, and she only regrets not starting sooner.
What are the startup costs?
Sylvie is happy to tell you that it is extremely low-cost to join at the moment. There is an entry kit priced at $25, which includes several books, a $15 book credit, a 6 month e-business package, and more.
She joined when the kit was $30 and she made that money back (plus much more) within two weeks of joining. She started making money at her first party.
What is the time commitment?
Each party takes about 4-5 hours of prep and follow-up work. (It will take a little longer at first since there is a learning curve.) Each party on average brings in about $500 in sales, which is $125 commission for the consultant.
There are additional ways to make money and free books as well. Consultants get paid on a weekly basis.
You can work as much or as little as you want. There are no requirements to sell any minimum amount at any time as a consultant. There is also no auto-renewal, so it is very easy to pause if/when needed and you can do so at no cost.
Do her kids help with this side hustle?
Sylvie’s kids love to help with book reviews. What a great way for them to get in some extra reading, writing, and practice comprehension!

How do you juggle homeschooling and this side hustle?
I work two hours every morning before the kids wake up. When I have a party at night, my husband cares for the children so I can be fully dedicated to my work.
How long have you been homeschooling?
Nine years!
What homeschool curriculum do you use?
We are a SDE (self-directed education) family, so what we use changes often and is always driven by the children’s interests.
How old are your children?
Sylvie’s children are currently 8, 9 and 11 years old.
