Young Living – More than Essential Oils

By Jill McDonough

Laura Brianne is a great juggler of homeschooling and side-hustling. Below she tells us how Young Living is more than great essential oils. She has a talent for really personalizing your experience with Young Living and making it a great side hustle for busy, homeschooling moms. Let’s learn how she does this.

What’s your side hustle?

I am a network marketing industry leader with Young Living.

How long have you been doing this side hustle?

I started using Young Living in November 2013, however, I did not start business building until very recently.

Talk about getting started, startup costs, making money, time commitment, etc.

Getting started in Young Living can be personalized. Many only talk about the essential oils, however there are so many more options. Using one of the existing start up kits will cost you $125-$265, and there are some great options that fit just about anyone.

There is one other option for joining, and that is a specialized set-up where I work with you to find what you want/need and we build your own personalized kit. This option doesn’t have a specific price point because we build it to fit individual need/want, could be as low as $50.

I started making money within a month of joining, even though I was not trying to. I started bringing a few hundred dollars each month within a year or so, without trying. If I had actually been trying I could have easily replaced my “job” income very quickly.

Time commitment is an interesting topic in the Young Living world. The reality is that this is a lifestyle, and so without even thinking about it you end up sharing it with friends and family. (This is part of why I started making money without trying.)

So when you decide that you want to use this platform to build a home business, you really can just decide how much time and resources you would like to put into it.

I would say I spend a decent amount of time ‘working’ but I am a leader and I thrive on learning and sharing what I learn, plus I am counting my personal development activities as well. And by decent I really mean like sitting on my computer/tablet/phone in short bursts throughout the day most days.

I host classes in person or online at least once a week, and those only last 1-3 hours each depending on subject and whatnot.

Do your kids help you with this side hustle?

Sometimes! I have a 10 year old son that enjoys learning with me (homeschool can be so much fun!) and trying all the things. This is always interesting because the way his mind works is different from mine, so sometimes he picks up on things or ideas that I don’t.

He has been my sidekick at classes as well, keeping other kids entertained so the parents can participate a little more easily. He has started playing with making his own oil blends as well.

What are the pros of this side hustle?

  • It is not ‘sale’ based, it is about sharing natural products. It is about helping people reach wellness goals using natural options, if it won’t help them don’t have them buy it!
  • Your wellness becomes a worry of the past when you start using these products.
  • I get free products every time I order. (There is a minimum order amount, but it is not high and the free products you get usually are close in value to how much you spent.)
  • You gain a family. We care about each other and help each other through everything life throws.
  • Building a business is easy and we have one of the best compensation plans out there. There isn’t an income ceiling AND you can will your income to your children for when you’re no longer around.
  • No need to keep an inventory. Buy only what you are going to use.

What are the cons of this side hustle?

The cons….can I get back to you on that? LOL!

How do you juggle homeschooling and this side hustle?

Like I said previously, I do my work in short bursts of time throughout the day mostly. However, if there is something that I need to spend a bit more time on (like having a call with someone that would like my help with products) I do them while my kiddo is doing some of his more independent work. For us this is reading time, math (mostly), prompted writing, etc.

How long have you been homeschooling? What homeschool curriculum do you use?

We actually just started homeschooling July 2019. I had wanted to homeschool since I found out I was going to be a mom, but 2019 is when the stars aligned, so to speak.

My son is 10, so this school year would be 5th grade for him. Interestingly enough, I have piecemealed our learning to fit us and so we do not use just a single curriculum plan. We use Saxon for math, Apologia for science, and my college Wie Geht’s books for German.

I have self-created most of our other subject plans for the time being, finding great resources for each. I am actually working on compiling the information for a Facebook group I have.

Would you recommend Young Living as a side hustle?

I would. The possibilities are limitless. Many of the members start out just because they want to move to using non-toxic products and then BOOM that first check arrives unexpectedly. All of a sudden they realize that they can be that stay at home parent they always wanted to be, easily have the freedom to take family vacations, homeschool the kids.

Success looks different to everyone and Young Living is a great way to reach your version of it.
