Start a Cleaning Side Hustle

By Jill McDonough

Side hustles for homeschool moms need to be flexible and something we are able to do. A cleaning side hustle, which can go in several different directions, is an ideal side hustle for homeschool moms.

Let’s see how awesome homeschooling mom Erica Losch is successful with her cleaning side hustle.

What’s your side hustle?

I started a cleaning business – Framework Cleaning.

How did you get into this particular side hustle?

A friend suddenly found herself a single mom. While trying to help her find work to support her family, a builder friend said they had some post construction cleaning that needed to be done. They said if I worked with her, they would have a job for her. I agreed in order to help her. Long story short, I ended up starting a business.

How long have you been doing this side hustle?

Four years or so. (Although I have cleaned off and on for 30 years.)

Talk about getting started.

The startup was just the cost of my cleaning supplies, initially. Eventually we had to make it an official business, get insurance, file with the state, etc.

In cleaning, your income comes in as fast as you can acquire customers. We branched into residential and commercial cleaning as well which gives us steady income. The amount of time needed depends on how much you want/need to work.

Do your kids help you with this side hustle?

Yes. My kids are now teens and above. As they were old enough, they started helping. It is a great way to help them earn money.

What are the pros of this side hustle?

Extra cash and flexibility.

What are the cons of this side hustle?

I personally hate anything that has to do with dealing with the state, taxes, paperwork, etc. Fortunately, I can hand that over to my hubby.

If you chose to do commercial cleaning, the work is done before or after their work hours, which is not my favorite.

How do you juggle homeschooling and this side hustle?

When I started my kids were already upper elementary and older. That gave me the freedom to be gone one or two days a week. At first, I would have to do school prep with my youngest the day before or work with him once I was home. We learned to be flexible.

I think it would be harder with younger kids unless you had someone to stay with your kids and help them with school.

How long have you been homeschooling?

We have been homeschooling since 2004.  We have graduated three.  Only one more to go!

What homeschool curriculum do you use?

When the kids were young, we used Sonlight. (We LOVE Sonlight.) We added in Phonics (Explode the Code) and we used Horizons Math.

When the kids were Junior High and above we switched to what would work best for each child to finish out their schooling. The main subject curriculum we use are:

Apology for Science

The Mystery of History (We could barely put it down. It’s so good!) and Notgrass History

Teaching Textbooks for upper math.

Abeka and Easy Grammar for Grammar.

Would you recommend this particular side hustle?

Yes. It is about as flexible as you would like to be. You can bring on as many residential customers or builders as you would like.

The post construction cleaning is hard and very particular work but is good if you are willing. You will need a crew of 2-4 people for most post construction.
