doTERRA Homeschool Mom Side Hustles

doTERRA Essential Oils

By Jill McDonough

Emily Cook is one smart, homeschooling, side-hustling momma. She has picked a great side hustle and knows how to schedule her time. Let’s learn more from Emily.

How did you get interested in selling doTERRA?

I initially got into essential oils because they smelled good. However, as I started using them for different ailments my husband and I had – and they worked – I started telling others about them and that’s when I decided to start making this a business for me.

How long have you been doing this side hustle?

6 years

Talk about getting started (startup costs, how long it took to start making decent money (be specific if you’d like), time commitment, etc.)

The start-up cost is the cost of your starter kit, which can be as little as $100. Then a monthly commitment of $100 to continue to earn a paycheck. The speed on how fast you earn decent money depends on how much time per week you can work on your business. I recommend a minimum of 10-15 hours per week to see growth in this business.

Do your kids help you with this side hustle?

Yes. I send samples to prospective customers and they help prepare the sample packets. They also love the oils and will tell people about them.

What are the pros of this side hustle?

  • Get to be your own boss
  • No cap for earning potential
  • Set your own hours
  • Personal development
  • Choose who you work with
  • Help other people
  • Opportunity for travel
  • True residual income
  • Work with a company that is making a global impact
  • Work from anywhere

What are the cons of this side hustle?

  • It can take time to see a big paycheck
  • Stigma of network marketing

How do you juggle homeschooling and this side hustle?

I’m coming into my first year of homeschooling. Since Feb 2015 when I quit my job and became a SAHM building this business, I’ve started giving myself small chunks of time during the day to do business things. I’ll give the kids an activity or they will play and I set the timer for 15-20 minutes and focus on what I need to get done. I can also do a lot at night when they go to bed.

How long have you been homeschooling? What homeschool curriculum do you use? Kids’ ages/grades?

This is my first year actually homeschooling. I worked hard the first 4 years to build a business that would allow me to quit my full time job and be home with my kids so I would have the opportunity to homeschool.

My oldest (5.5) is enrolled in the EPIC co-op at Peace Church. They will provide supplemental activities so we don’t have a specific curriculum for him yet. My youngest (4) is going to a church preschool a couple days a week and on the off days she will probably join her brother in the things he is doing.

Would you recommend this particular side hustle?

Absolutely! I’ve fallen in love with essential oils and they have helped me so much in keeping my family healthy. It’s so natural to share with others and amazing to be paid for sharing what I love.
